The adsorption of organic matter onto minerals affects the origin of life, carbon sequestration and climate studies. Using optical-photothermal infrared (O-PTIR) spectroscopy, we performed the first in situ analysis of molecular fractionation within individual halite crystals. A fluid inclusion trail displaying an orange-to-blue fluorescence gradient revealed variations in the molecular composition of ancient carbon-based fluids. Microfractures acted as chromatographic capillaries, facilitating selective organic-mineral interactions and inducing fluorescence changes. These findings advance our understanding of fluid-rock processes at the nanoscale. O-PTIR can also distinguish between free and adsorbed methane, identify hydrate signatures and study fractionation in confined systems, offering a new tool for methane hydrate research and subsurface carbon cycling.

Mehdi Ostadhassan,德国基尔大学地球科学学院教授,2021年荣获德国“洪堡学者”高级研究奖学金。2005年及2007年分别获得伊朗石油工业大学本科和硕士学位,2013年于University of North Dakota(UND)获得了石油地质力学博士学位。2019年在NDSU石油工程系晋升为副教授,2019年担任东北石油大学特聘教授。研究涵盖地球化学、地质力学、岩石物理学和材料科学,通过多尺度、跨学科的方法深化对地下能源系统的理解。担任Journal of Oil, Gas and Petrochemical Sciences副主编和Journal of Chemistry首席客座编辑,是美国石油工程师协会、勘探地球物理学家协会以及美国石油地质学家协会会员。现已出版多部学术著作,在Geology、AAPG Bulletin、Energy、MPG和IGCJ等国际地学权威期刊发表200余篇学术论文,SCI引用8200多次,H指数51, 多篇论文入选SCI高被引论文。从2021年起,连续入选斯坦福大学发布的“全球前2%顶尖科学家”榜单。
