First Circular
The SETAC Asia/Pacific Focus Meeting on Environment Pollution and Health in Coastal Zones along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road will be held on April 23-26, 2019 in Guangzhou, China.
Both the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and China’s Belt & Road Initiative call for a sound global environment and wellbeing. The SETAC A/P Focus Meeting will concentrate on environment pollution and health in coastal zones along the 21st Century Maritime Silk Road (MSR) , where developing countries/regions receive industrial production capacity tranfer and huge solid waste flux from developed countries/regions, while the MSR itself has been a key maritime transport route for global commodity and solid waste. There are evidences that highly populated cities and coastal waters in the coastal zones suffer from environmental pollution which could pose threats to human health and wildlife.
The SETAC A/P Focus Meeting will bring together scientists from both developed and developing countries/regions and cover key scientific topics associated with environment pollution and health in coastal zones. The purpose of the Focus Meeting is to identify key problems in environmental pollution and health in coastal zones along the MSR, assess the critical needs of capacity building and international cooperation, and co-design relevant international scientific programmes.
Guangzhou is a metropolitan city in Southern China and a key economic and innovation engine of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area (GBA). The city, which was one of the stations of the ancient MSR, is now China’s gateway to all the MSR destinations.
The Focus Meeting is co-organized by the Guangzhou Institute of Geochemistry, the Chinese Academy of Sciences (GIGCAS), the State Key Laboratory of Organic Geochemistry, and SETAC Asia Pacific Division.
